Share the Love & Earn Some Badges! ❤️

dev.to staff - Apr 9 - - Dev Community

We're back with another badge release!

This time around, we have three new badges to introduce, all of which are themed around a recent Moderator contest we held called the DEV Mod Share the Love Contest.

Our three new mod badges are floating in front of fireworks and pulsating — growing larger and smaller. From left to right, we see the badges: Wisdom Whisperer, #howtodevto Hero, and Caring Commenter. All badges are circular and uniform in design. Wisdom Whisperer is blue and pink with a talking face that has a heart on its cheek. #howtodevto Hero is red with a bunch of hearts and a graphic of a computer window open to dev.to. Caring Commenter is green with a talking face on top of many hearts.

Below, we'll discuss the three new badges and explain how to earn them, but before we do, let's talk a bit more about this contest...

DEV Mods Sharing the Love 💜

For the last two weeks of March, we held a contest amongst our community moderators encouraging the group to leave thoughtful comments across new members' and we_coded posts.

There were two badges available to be earned by mods who participated in the contest:

  • we_coded Modvocate — rewarded to mods who leave 5+ thoughtful comments across #wecoded posts during March 2024.
  • Mod Welcome Party — rewarded to mods who leave 5+ thoughtful comments across new members’ posts during March 2024.

While these badges were exclusive to mods and only able to be earned during the DEV Mod Share the Love Contest, we decided to craft a few extra badges in the spirit of the contest and make them available to all DEV members. We want to urge everybody in our community to share the love year-round!

Two cartoon, line-drawn hands enter the picture and do a handshake, then a fist bump. When the fists separate there is a cloud of smoke that turns into a heart before disappearing.

Let's All Share the Love 💚

The three new badges we have for you all are:

  • Wisdom Whisperer — Rewarded for giving exceptionally helpful advice to new DEV members.
  • Caring Commenter — Rewarded for leaving exceptionally thoughtful comments across many different DEV members’ posts.
  • #howtodevto Hero — Rewarded for giving helpful advice on how to use DEV. (Often rewarded to those writing guides under #howtodevto.)

As mentioned, these new badges are available to be earned by anyone in our community and have been crafted to encourage kind, thoughtful, inclusive, and helpful behavior — values that we hold high and believe to be very much in line with our Code of Conduct.

Notably, these badges are different than many DEV badges in that they cannot be earned by taking a certain number of actions and instead are qualitative in nature. DEV Admin will be looking out for exemplary behavior and rewarding folks who we believe are going above and beyond to share the love. If someone helps you out or treats you particularly kindly, we urge you to message us and let us know!

So what now?

We're trying our best to foster a diverse, inclusive, and kind community for all developers! We really want to reward those caring individuals who go above and beyond to assist and uplift others in the community.

These new badges are a fun way to show our appreciation to those awesome people out there sharing the love and making DEV a better place. ❤️
